Snake 3k: A modern take on a timeless classic [Alpha Release]
What?
Who doesn't remember this classic game from the early 2000's? Endless hours of fun controlling a pixelated snake around to eat some food and get a higher and higher score. Be careful not to try and eat your own tail. Unsurprisingly trying to eat yourself doesn't end well, in any regard.
Well, during a regular period of time in the regular year of 2020 I decided I wanted to try my hand again* at learning a bit of game development. Specifically, Phaser3.
* I previously tried to learn some iOS game development, but alas it was not meant to be.
The Idea
This is an idea I've had floating around for years. Kinda. It's built off the back of an idea I've had floating around for a few years.
The original idea was a hybrid between Snake & Tron. 2 players would each control a snake, on the same arena, and fight it out to be the best. There would be a single piece of food in the arena, and 2 players trying to get it. Let the madness ensue.
But Wait!
It's not as simple as just eating food (it kinda is, but humour me). Because each player controls a snake, they can cut off their opponent in their pursuit of the food. A la Tron. Let the madness ensue.
But Wait!
Everyone loves an underdog. Wouldn't it be fun if the players could eat through their opponents tail? Right when one of the players is sat their twiddling their moustache cutting of their opponents about to win, and then BAM. The 2nd player activates a powerup and nibbles straight through the tail of player 1. Changing the game instantly as player 1 loses not only their tail, but their score as well!
Note: This is an initial (Alpha) release of my Snake3k game. The next step is to pretty much rewrite the game so that it is multiplayer, and more of the logic is handled by the server.
